I'll say it plainly: buying on unit price is the most expensive habit in industrial procurement. It's not that buyers are lazy. It's that we've been trained to compare invoices instead of outcomes. PET costs more per pound. But for our product lines, it processes cleaner, weighs less in transit, and opens the door to commercially available recycled resin. When I look at the full manufacturing and fulfillment chain, PET is the TCO winner for certain applications. The number on the resin price list was never the right number to look at.
We once chose a cheaper HDPE grade for a sealing component because the resin price looked great. The seals warped under heat in production. Rework cost: $1,200 in labor and materials, not counting the delayed shipment to the customer. The "cheap" resin was the most expensive we ever bought.
Don't let a pet parade of one-liners about "cheaper per pound" march you straight into a higher total cost. Material decisions deserve more than glance-and-compare.
Why "Recyclable" Is Not Marketing Fluff
I should add that recycled-content claims carry regulatory weight. Per the FTC's Green Guides (ftc.gov), a product can only be marketed as "recyclable" if a substantial majority of consumers—at least 60% by the FTC's standard—have access to recycling facilities that accept it. You can't just put a leaf on the label and call it a day. If your customer asks for recyclable packaging, and they will, you need a material that genuinely clears that bar.
PET is one of the most widely recycled plastics in the US. That's why PET recycling has a functioning market: recycled PET (rPET) is consistently available from multiple suppliers, which keeps pricing competitive and supply predictable. When our procurement team switched a packaging line to rPET a couple of years ago, the per-unit difference was small. The annual savings, combined with the compliance benefit, was significant. I want to say we saved around $6,000 in the first year, but don't quote me on that.
And we almost didn't make the switch. I had our spec review scheduled and considered pushing it back by a week. "But Our Budget Is Tight Right Now"

What does the full order cost? Equipment, tooling, calibration, freight, setup. What does it cost to keep running? Maintenance, service intervals, energy, consumables. What does failure cost? Scrap, downtime, re-qualification. What does compliance cost? Documentation, certifications, audits.
