How to Choose a Gates Hydraulic Hose Crimper, Air Hose Hook, and Whether Thermoplastic Rubber Is Safe

If you're hoping for one straight answer—'buy this' or 'do that'—I get it. That's how I usually like to shop. But after five years of handling industrial rubber and hose orders for a company with about 400 employees, I've learned that hoses and air fittings aren't a one-size-fits-all purchase. What works for a maintenance shop that replaces a hose once a month is completely different from a production line building assemblies all day.

So here's a scenario-based guide, written from the purchasing side, not the engineering side. Pick the branch that sounds like your week.

A few ways to be 'right' about a Gates hydraulic hose crimper

Scenario A: You fix things 'when they break'

Is thermoplastic rubber safe?

This is one of the most common questions I get from people outside the industry. The honest answer is: it depends on what you're putting through it.

General industrial air and water: usually yes

For shop air or water, TPR is a genuinely good material. It's flexible, resists kinking, and doesn't get stiff in cold weather like some PVC blends. We use TPR hose for our cold room washdown line, and it's held up better than the rubber hose it replaced.

Food, beverages, or chemicals: you need a specific compound

Here's the part people skip: 'thermoplastic rubber' is a family of materials, not a safety certificate. If the hose is going to touch food or drinking water, you need a compound formulated for food contact and tested to the relevant FDA or NSF requirement. Under the FDA's 21 CFR rules, materials that contact food have to be suitable for the intended use. A generic TPR garden hose is not the same as a food-transfer hose, even if both feel flexible and smell faintly of rubber.

Homemade PPE: just don't

Occasionally I hear from someone trying to use TPR hose or sheet to build a DIY respirator or mask. Don't do that. Industrial rubber products aren't tested for breathing applications. Use certified PPE from a safety supplier, not a hose fitting you found in the maintenance room.

How to tell which scenario you're in

If all of this feels like a lot, use these four questions as a shortcut. Your answers line you up with the right branch.

  • How many hose assemblies do you build in a normal week? If it's under three, a portable crimper. If it's over ten, go production.
  • Do you carry the crimper to worksites, or does it stay in one building? That decides the weight class.
  • How many tools will run at the same time from the same air supply? Count the CFM, not just the ports.
  • What is the hose carrying? Air and water let you use standard TPR. Food or chemical means you need a certified material.

The bottom line

In 2020, I would have told you to buy the least expensive option and hope for the best. We did that, and it cost us—a bad splitter, a few failed assemblies, and a lot of wasted time. By 2025, the fundamentals haven't changed all that much: check the spec sheet, match the equipment to the workload, and buy from a brand that will still support it in five years. Gates has been around long enough that we can still order parts for the original units we bought. That's worth something.
