The Day I Almost Trusted the Box

I wasn't expecting to spend a Tuesday afternoon cutting open a hose with a utility knife. But there I was, on the warehouse floor, trying not to swear.

If you're a one-person operation buying a single hose, you can't inspect every inch. But you can ask for lot numbers, check manufacturer resources, and insist on authorized sources. Your mileage may vary if you're dealing with deadlines so tight you can't breathe. In that case, the calculus might be different.

The vendor who would have sent the counterfeit batch said they couldn't verify the lot. We stopped using them. The vendor who said, 'let's get Gates on the phone with you'—that's the one we've kept. The difference wasn't the logo on the product. It was the willingness to prove where it came from.

I'm glad I opened that one box. I almost didn't. That is the whole lesson: verification is not a crime. It's the job.
