When to choose Gates, and when to choose Parker
Before we get into the comparison, I should clear up one search term. If you came here looking for pet gates for cats, or for the search phrase 'pet gates with door', this article is not going to help you. I'm talking about Gates, the industrial rubber and hydraulics company, not home barriers for pets.
I coordinate emergency hose and rubber goods orders for industrial customers. Six years, 200-plus rush orders, and one very expensive lesson later, I compare parts differently than I did early in my career. I do not start with brand loyalty. That distinction matters. An emergency purchase is not the same as a planned purchase. It has tighter timing, less room for research, and higher consequences if you are wrong.

In a rush, it is tempting to ask for any hose that looks close enough. I do not do that. According to SAE J517, hydraulic hose constructions are grouped by pressure rating and reinforcement style. I need the SAE or ISO class, the dash size, the temperature range, and often the fitting type before I can choose anything.

There is also a causal link that trips people up. We tend to think expensive vendors are good because of the premium price. In reality, the relationship often runs the other way: they build good products and can charge more because of that reputation. Price is an output, not a signal. When comparing hoses, I prefer to look at the layline and the test certificate instead of price or branding.
Dimension two: Availability wins the emergency
If I had to name the most common mistake in an emergency, it would be this: letting brand preference override local stock. I have seen buyers lose an entire day because they insisted on one brand while an equivalent certified product was sitting in a distributor's warehouse nearby.

But saying that does not require me to call Parker hydraulic hose a poor product. It is not. The better choice depends on the exact hose, the service environment, and who can deliver it with complete records.
When I am triaging a rush order, the final test is simple: will this part work safely, can I verify it, and can I get it before the next shift needs the machine? That's what really separates a good emergency decision from a brand decision.
